When the city opted to do this though, they chose to reuse the headstones. This creates a subtly haunting yet unique design in the park. Gutters are finally the recipient of special attention from the public and have their details noticed.

The cool thing about these gutters is that it shows the city of SF took a bad hand that they were dealt (bodies to relocate) and turned it into something positive for future generations to cherish. Instead of sinking the headstones into the bay , they were recycled using creative methods and are still in use today. The attention to detail is amazing and using gutters as an architectural design nexus is often not actualized. It is a nontraditional approach for sure but  is effective and adds a layer of curiosity for those passerbys who  maybe catch a piece of someone’s name out of the corner of their eye and ponder who that person was.
